Executive Committee

Meet The Team

Kiersten van Vliet

I am a third-year PhD student in Musicology and Gender and Women's Studies at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University. Last year, I was the AGSEM Mobilization Officer and Interim President, and before that I was the Chief Delegate Invigilator, as well as a member of the Mobilization and Equity & Diversity Committees. I was an invigilator during my MA at McGill (2015–17), and a TA since 2017.

I ran for AGSEM President on improving the culture of equity and accountability within our Union as we negotiate for better working conditions for teaching assistants and invigilators at McGill. I am the Officer primarily responsible for maintaining internal stability and democracy while building relationships with our affiliates, interest groups, and labour unions across campus and North America. If you're ever unsure of who to contact, I'm a good bet!

Rine Vieth

Mobilization Officer

I'm a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology at McGill University. I've been a TA since my arrival on-campus (2015), and was an OSD Invigilator in 2018-2019. My goals this year include strengthening cross-university relationships; working with Invigilators to create bargaining goals; and helping TAs learn how to teach and support students through trainings and workshops. I'm an international student (who has lived in a few countries), so I take a particular interest in talking with new arrivals to Canada about labor rights. I also am passionate about working to create a better learning environment—and working conditions—for BIPOC, LGBTQ, and disabled people.

Let's talk about how we can build a supportive community together!

Matei Petrescu

I am third year Ph.D. candidate in Physics Department of the Faculty of Science at McGill University. I have been an AGSEM delegate for my department for the past 4 yearswhile I have simultaneously fulfilled the VP Finance position for the McGill Graduate Association of Physics Students (MGAPS). I have gained valuable experience working in both positions. As a result, I have been elected as Secretary-Treasurer at the last General Assemble (GA - April 2018) for the 2018-2019 mandate. My main role is to manage the financial activities of the Union. In conclusion, I am holding the purse stings and I hold them tightly!

Kedar Mate

TA Grievance Officer

Hi AGSEM members,

I am currently working towards my PhD at School of Physical Occupational Therapy. I started working for AGSEM since May 2015 and it has been a very exciting and fulfilling experience. As a Grievance officer, my role is to work with Hiring Units and McGill to help and protect Teaching Assistants in performing their duties, overlook timely and justified pay for your hard work and provide harassment free environment. I also work with mobilization during various events throughout the year. I am here for you, so come and talk to me and get to know AGSEM, which you are a huge part of.

Teresa Joseph

Invigilator Grievance Officer

I am a PhD. student in neuroscience. Have been involved with AGSEM for a year now as a invigilator bargaining officer. Working in the union has broadened my perspective about working on campus and I am more than happy to help you with any invigilator grievances. You can either contact me via email or just come drop by during our office hours.

Mario Roy

Macdonald Campus Officer

Hi AGSEM members, I am currently a second-year master student in agricultural economics at Macdonald campus from McGill university. Recently elected as the AGSEM Macdonald campus officer, my goal for this year is to promote to our members from Macdonald campus all benefits and rights that they have as TAs and invigilators. It will be obtained through streaming Delegates’ Council meeting and other union meetings as well as organizing more mobilization events and activities at Macdonald Campus. Come see me or send me an email if you have anything happening or want to get more involved with the union! I will be happy to assist you!

Jessica Rose

TA Bargaining Chair

I am a PhD student in the department of History and Classical Studies and Chair of the TA Bargaining Committee. I was previously an organizer for the New York State Nurses Association (a union for registered nurses) in New York City, where I also completed a certificate in Labor Studies at CUNY before starting my MA. As Chair of the Bargaining Committee, I am focused on integrating a discussion of academic community and the quality of McGill’s learning environment into AGSEM’s TA bargaining campaign. As graduate students, many of whom are aspiring academics, our labour is interdependent with the intellectual labour of the community around us, which includes our colleagues, supervisors, and undergraduate students. The boundaries of our labour can often be unclear within the context of our respective programs - we are both students and instructors, experts and trainees, employees and funded researchers. AGSEM's Collective Agreement will ensure an investment in fair and reasonably compensated teaching assistantships, something that is fundamental to the pedagogical values of the wider university community. I believe that unionized graduate student labour is in a uniquely valuable position to address issues of precarity, austerity, corporatization in higher education.

Mohammed Antar

Invigilator Bargaining Chair

Dear AGSEM members, I am currently a PhD candidate in Plant Science in the Department of Plant Science at Macdonald Campus of McGill University. I was recently elected to be a representative to the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (FAES) within Macdonald Campus Graduate Students’ Society (MCGSS). I joined AGSEM when my teaching assistantship and invigilator career at McGill started in January 2018. In April 2019 I was elected Pre-Bargaining Committee Chair of AGSEM.

For the upcoming academic year (2019/2020), my objectives are to understand all invigilator-related issues and try to solve invigilator problems with the support of the AGSEM Executive Committee. Fighting for invigilators rights and benefits is one of the things which will be my main focus. Therefore, I ask all invigilators at McGill, both downtown and at Macdonald campus, to feel free to reach me for any enquiry you may have.
